There are several frameworks out there which handle this in various ways. Probably the most well known is Cairngorm, which would put the Remote Object calls into Delegates and your common dropdown data into the ModelLocator.
Cairngorm can be a little daunting at first, but just remember that it's really just a collection of design patterns. Most of these patterns can be taken out of it and used without the entire framework. Specifically, the ModelLocator and ServiceLocator are very easy to use without the overhead of the rest of the framework to worry about.
