Cher-e-s CoCodingGouteur-e-s,

ce qui me motive aussi c'est que ce document raconte un peu d'informatique et de de culture scientifique liée au numérique au delà du codage; et c'est pas mal aussi de montrer qu'on a une vision européenne de tout ça;

à suivre... (d'ici qq semaines)

Bien Amicalement à tou-te-s/./

- *How to ?* : we plan to ask a professional translator (using Inria fund) to translate the text; then a group of colleagues/partners of "coding-party" French communities (e.g. http://jecode.org ) will share the work of re-read, correct/complete and generate medias in French; and then we widely advertise about it.
/does this seem ok ?///

//

That sounds ideal. We'd appreciate if you would share when the work is done - and don't hesitate to get in touch for assistance or clarification at any point.

- *Will all French start doing Computer Science ?* The Education Minister made a public announcement (July the 13th) regarding secondary school (collège age 11-14) and primary school as extracurricular activities; good news ! but indeed with a partial implementation the 1st year, but unfortunately with the teacher formation still challenged; but /_yes_/ : this is definitely what's motivate the present action.

- *The open-source plan *: my two words answer «oh oui !» encouraging input/updates is not only cool and useful, but might be the best lever for a huge diffusion (everyone can say this /our/ resource); we may also, under your control, consider availability as a ebook (also trying to persuade NOT to paper-print but save the planet); or as a collection (chapter by chapter, i.e. activity by activity) of sub-documents since modularity and/or multi-support availability may help dissemination.
/to be set with you.///

//Excellent -- I'll be in touch in due course!

- *The scratch v 1.4 / 2 dilemma* : reading the tutor and learning notes i wonder if the text itself is not almost version invariant (while pictures are not) ? [ ] if yes : we may start the translation «now» (if we find someone working in France in August 8-) otherwise September) [ ] if no (i.e. if you are going to rewrite the main text) we indeed wait for October but prepare the soldiers
/tell me.///

The plan at this point is to do a simple conversion (and little/nothing else) to make the materials Scratch 2.0 and App inventor 2 "compliant". The open-sourcing phase is when we'd envisage extending and rewriting the materials.

- *And beyond ... *: indeed (translate «I Love My Smartphone» and others, consider formal collaborations of #strongandproductive collaborations, ...); as usual if we have a concrete outcome in hand (i.e. «Scratch est mon Starter» 8-) ) this will a springboard, while i am pretty sure that the Inria board will encourage such idea.

Strong and productive collaborations sound great! Please keep in touch.

Very sincerely

   Dear Thierry,

Thank you so much for getting in touch. I'd be delighted for you to
create a French version of /Starting from Scratch/ on the basis that
you mention below and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) strongly
   supports this.

The Computing Science Exemplification project, on which I've been
working for the RSE (Scotland's national academy) and the British
Computer Society, was designed in the first place to support the
Computing Science content of Scotland's new national /Curriculum for
Excellence/; however, the materials have been picked up across the
UK and internationally -- although a French language version would
add a welcome new dimension to the work. How widely do you
anticipate it being used? Will all French schools now be doing
   Computing Science?

In addition to /Starting from Scratch/, I've also produced:

·*/Itching for More/*-- an intermediate course that follows on from
/Starting from Scratch/, focussing on abstraction and modularity,
using the BYOB Scratch mod from UC Berkeley.

·*/I Love My Smartphone/*-- consolidates the above work, or can be
used standalone as an introduction to Computing Science, using MIT's
App Inventor Android OS development environment.

   ·There's also */Information Everywhere/*, which focuses on
information Systems in a WWW-based context, plus a fifth resource
*/Live to Code/*, based on the LiveCode environment from Scottish
developer RunRev which will be available soon.

All the resources can be found at
   http://www.royalsoced.org.uk/1034_ComputingScience.html

*Please note that I'm about to start work on updating all the above
resources to make them suitable for use with Scratch 2.0 and App
Inventor 2 respectively.*I'll be starting with /I Love My
   Smartphone/, then /Starting from Scratch/, followed by /Itching for
More/. I plan to have all of the updated resources available by
October. If you can wait, it may be worth doing so -- or you may
wish to convert the existing Starting from Scratch resource directly
   into Scratch 2.0.

After that, we plan to open-source the project, encouraging input,
updates and additional material from the wider community. Perhaps
you could continue to provide input at this stage, too?

One last thing: the RSE has recently been running a series of events
with the French Embassy focusing on areas of mutual interest and
   collaboration

in science, reflecting "the strong and productive relations" between
the two countries. One such seminar

on Computer Science and highlighted the work of INRIA.

   Best wishes,

   Jeremy Scott

*Subject:* a French version of Starting from Scratch

   Dear Professor Scott,
Advised by Gérard Berry, i discovered «Starting from Scratch»,
at the time when introduction of computer science in school is going
to start in France, after an official declaration of our education
   minister.
Since i am in charge of science outreach at Inria, willing to
help French teachers regarding this challenge, and since we more or
less start from scratch with scratch :) being able to produce a
French version of your «introduction to computer science» would be
   of great help.
This French version would indeed be open and free for use as
your original document, CC licensed, non-commercial, and explicitly
quoted as a French version of yours, and submitted to you when finished.
We plan to do it in the next weeks if ok for you.
