Sorry, and normally I wouldn't, but as mentioned it is difficult to get to many

Wikipedia... Ah the font of all that is true ;-) But I'll take a read anyway.

Point made, and taken, but it isn't a solution, particularly in the long term, 
and that's what we need....

I was merely trying to point out the predicament, and some ideas for debate.

We can indeed say 'that's a bad idea' but more importantly we need some 
positive and constructive ideas on how we CAN get more core developers either 
short or long term.

If paid for devs are out, we have to look to our users, (many of whom are 
undoubtedly quite experienced) but how do we communicate with  them and get 
them more involved ?
