Okay, that explains a few things. The u-boot binary also sounds a bit dangerous, because the NAND partitions have changed recently. So if you mix instructions for the old layout with a new u-boot, this ought to add a few plot twists before the happy ending. What surprises me is that the Debian-style bricking appears to kill u-boot itself, which means that one then has to fiddle with the USB boot contact.
