I think tuxbrain was working initially on a hacking image based on jlime that allowed to pogram arduino from IDE, dunno last state of this. Later i remenber project called ardunote, wich basically is ported avrdude running from openwrt but i dont have all details. As you may know there is UBB wich could be easilly wired to a breadboard or similar as it is very general porpuses. About the SDIO-like stuff , i think is no very much used as most of the stuff is bit-bang.
