Hmm, if it's really only dirt, then I'd try first with a bit of paper soaked in alcohol. (Or spray alcohol into the connector, then pass with the paper.) Using anything abrasive against dirt has the risk of damaging the gold/nickel coating of the contacts, causing them to deteriorate more rapidly.
