-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA512 Here is some salt to the salad:
1. The FSF has been lurking on an ARM-based SoC with only one component left to liberate: the video decoder. (I hope that) work is underway to provide this last bit of software. The SoC model is based on Freescale I.MX6 processor family. So you're probably competing at least against the Wandboard[0]. Anything less than that is likely to cost more to produce and probably won't attract nor convince anyone but <10K hardware hackers. 2. One thing that hardware freedom can do that a megacorp cannot is design for durability and extensibility instead of designing for planned obsolescence. IMO, Ben's successor should be not planned as an encased nano-computer but as an extensible and hackable platform. The case should be one of the ways to use it, maybe its default form factor, but should not be the only one. I.e., it should be repurposable as a network device (maybe a Freedom Box?), a wearable glue machine, a thing-of-the Internet, an Arduino for adults: in brief, it should be able to have sex with other Bens and make chipdren. 3. Production shouldn't start unless there are already *at least* 10,000 units pre-ordered, and there should be an easy plan to make it dead simple to adapt the design to new demand. Of course, when talking about hardware it's pretty much a conundrum or a puzzle, as you see fit. Still, it's easier to sell future extensibility than future obsolescence. 4. Its production should not depend on a single person / entity that assumes all risk. That has proven to fail. If the world is not ready for freedom, you won't force it.
