Not having the wheel saves a lot. That part is USD 2.78 @ 5000 at
Digi-Key, so it probably doesn't go much lower than USD 1.5 even if
you buy in very large quantities.

The wheel, being the only through-hole component, also complicates
soldering, and testing it would be a treat.

The cost of the second PCB should be very small. It can be from
the same raw board as the main PCB so all it costs is the board
space, which is cheap.

If both boards are on the same panel, they also go through SMT
together. Again, no significant cost difference.

It will need some means of interconnection. An FPC soldered to the two
PCBs would probably be the best solution for volume. We already have a
much larger FPC to solder, for the OLED. For prototypes, where making
an FPC would be prohibitively expensive, I may just join the two with
a header or if this is too rigid, with individual wires.

Probably much cheaper. I would expect generating a field that simulates
a finger in the test fixture to be fairly straightforward. I've never
done this, so there may be surprises.
