I was thinking, maybe you could use some silicon instead of tape, so that it would keep liquid from creeping through. Or some paste of the blue-tak style that you would put in place with the (inverted) mask, then remove the mask, paint, and then remove the paste. I would expect less liquid paint going under a liquid mask. Another solution would be to use some kind of light glue for children (not to sniff but to glue paper): a thin layer of that would definitely prevent paint from passing, and you'd have to peel it off. BTW, it would be nice to start going through the mailing list archive and make a blog of the experiments from the beginning. The fund-raising campaign would be better for it.
