In France at least, companies can send and *receive* donations. Last time I told a CEO of a small company he could *receive* donations for some FLOSS-related work, he was very surprised and didn't know it. As for sending donations, they often prefer tax-deductible donations, which might not be the case for the vast majority of FLOSS projects. >From my own experience: I received donations for org-mode only from individuals.
