I just bought a WRAP for testing and I am waiting for it to arrive.

Can someone tell me the benefits of having a hard drive install inside a beefier PC over a slimmed down install in a WRAP type device?

PC gives you more power and flexibility. WRAP is a more reliable piece of hardware (no moving parts) and equally well suited in many environments.

I initially thought a hard drive install would be better because I thought I would get all sorts of reporting/log storage etc., I am not sure I see any of those benefits yet. Maybe I just need to dig a little deeper.

not for sure how the log files are handled, but I know clog is used, which rotates them. So it won't keep any more logs whether you're running the live CD, the embedded image, or the hard drive install. You should syslog them off to another host anyway.

So, two questions really..

1- Any good reason to NOT use a diskless/fanless WRAP type device?

if you want to run packages, or if you need high throughput (WRAP is maxed at around 40 Mbps).

2- How can I get some nice reporting on my traffic?

ntop package. though it can use a substantial amount of CPU, RAM, and storage space, and therefore isn't suitable for an embedded device.
