Does this imply that the only difference between the two images are that one
will automatically bring up a nic as LAN for configuration (embedded) and
the other requires configuration first?

Personally, I would love it if the generic did automatically pick first nic
it found as LAN and allow you to configure it from a web browser like the
embedded image did for my Soekris (which I didn't need to use a serial cable
with... COOL!)
