Hi,

I’m a BSD newbie with quite a lot of Linux experience.

I just installed BETA4, and after a bit of messing have also got squid working and blocking some unwanted URL’s.

First off, I’d like to thank any developers on the list for a really great job. I’m getting far better loading times on web pages, and the basic firewall is easy to set up, works straight out of the box and seems very polished. The GUI is also excellent.

I had a little trouble with the squid module, but soon googled that it wasn’t under active development, and that bits of it didn’t work. Maybe the web-gui bits of the setup should be disabled, as they seem to screw-up anything one puts in squid.conf if one touches them.

I messed about a bit trying to install packages from the main 6.1 tree at FreeBSD, but soon learned that versions are not necessarily the same, think I managed to screw up quite a bit by installing perl 5.8.8 from the main tree, Am I right in assuming that we should be careful with this?

My main question for now is about acpi and lcd backlighting (I’m using an old laptop on the wall). Previously, under Linux, the lid switch blanked the display and turned off backlighting, but I can no longer make this work. I’ve done a sysctl –a | grep acpi, and see:

hw.acpi.sleep_button_state: S3

hw.acpi.lid_switch_state: NONE

hw.acpi.standby_state: S1 acpi.power_button_state: S5

hw.acpi.reset_video: 1

dev.acpi_lid.0.%desc: Control Method Lid Switch

dev.acpi_lid.0.%driver: acpi_lid

dev.acpi_lid.0.%location: handle=\_SB_.C000.C007.C107

dev.acpi_lid.0.%pnpinfo: _HID=PNP0C0D _UID=0

dev.acpi_lid.0.%parent: acpi0

dev.sio.0.%parent: acpi0

have also tried loading the acpi_video module in loader.conf, but still see no controls

Also wondered about apm, but it looks as if the apm modules are not included in the pfsense distro. Would I need to compile my own kernel to include these?

Unfortunately I didn’t see how Linux controlled the display on/off before I removed it.

The laptop is an old Compaq armada

Any tips gratefully received!

Cheers

Marius
