nice -n- peppy I bet.

My PIII 550Mhz w/ 512Mbytes of old sdram on a lousy i810 chipset barely sweats at 30Mbps and 6k connections. :-) I would rate pfsense (and of course the underlying bsd) very efficient. Even with ntop and snort running, seems quite happy overall.

Good idea is to pop in Intel nic cards. (shhh, big secret, they sell 'server cards' with identical everything for 2x-3x the price, so buy the desktop ones and save the $$). I had [work buy] one server nic, bought a desktop card myself, and booted them both in the same machine. Zero difference in code, chip rev, anything. just the price.

Also helps to have last year's motherboard chipset, as the newly released ones take a couple minor revs to be stable in some cases.

cheers,
andy

p.s. nice look on the gui lately. Easy enough for me to have the wife go through and do a dhcp release and renew while I was away on business :-)
