Dual WAN + CARP works on our setup... The only problem that I encountered was when I used 64MB RAM (not recommended!) on an ancient Pentium II box, and we overloaded it with lots and lots of torrent downloads. Otherwise, pfSense works great (especially with correct hardware hehe)...
