I don't know if you guys might find this useful.
Tar crashes on ALIX boards when extracting large amounts of small files.
Work around was to untar directories individually like so.
exec("/usr/bin/tar xzf {$tmpfname}/{$snort_filename} -C {$snortdir} rules/
