Some of you may be aware that a section of the displaytag source code (the tld documentation and generations) was recently deleted from the displaytag project, and placed in a separate project called maven-taglib on sourceforge. ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/maven-taglib/ ).
I think that the TLD stuff is/is going to be widely useful. A Maven plugin makes a lot of sense. My concern is not that the code is out of the project, but the process in which the code left project. I didn't even realize that it had moved until I noticed a new build dependency; there was no discussion beforehand on this list. 1) The code was removed without any discussion on this list. Spinning off a subproject is a big deal, and I believe it should always be voted on. 2) The code was originally added to the new project with a different license from that of DisplayTag. This has been corrected in this case. In the future, we should require that spinouts maintain the same license as DisplayTag (the Artistic License). 3) The new project does not currently abide by the terms of the Artistic License. The Artistic requires that, if the elements of the code are distributed separately from the parent, "prominent notice in each changed file stating how and when you changed that file". There is currently a comment in 2 of the files saying that it was originally written by "Andy Tripp" (who???), and no mention that it came from displaytag. If code is moved from our CVS tree to that of another project, it should very clearly be marked that way. If this is not the consensus of the project, the license should probably be changed to a license that requires no attribution. 4) If code is going to be spun out, the committers at displaytag should determine the committers at the new project.
