The next step I'm working on is another optional attribute which gets a list to populate a "html select list" that is used for the filter.

I spent some work on extending your displaytag with a filter option.
If you think you could use it, I would be happy to contribute it. At the moment it does work for my interests, but I could spend some extra time to make it more customizable.
The codebase I used is from cvs.
