All,
This project is a definite success as a lot of folks are using and contributing to the displaytag. However, the development is concentrated to Fabrizio - who seems to be available only intermittently. As for support, I seem to be the only developer answering e-mails and forum postings and there's a lot of questions I can't answer b/c I didn't write the code and don't feel like digging in to try and figure out the answer. In essense, it feels like 1) none of us are using the display tag or 2) the tag is working for us so we don't have any more itches to scratch and don't contribute. I'm definitely in #2 - it does everything I need it to do.
In order to revive life into this project, I suggest we contact a couple of the active patchers or users and see if they want to become committers. The best way to get enthusiasm (IMO) is to get folks that are using this everyday, especially in high-data situations. What do you think?
Fabrizio - I think it's great what you've done with the code, but we need to release 1.0 soon and get on with 1.1. I also think we need to take procedures to release more often in the future. It seems like not much is happening, yet we're holding up the release. Since you wrote most of the code, I think you need to take a more active role as project leader - where you notify the group of target dates, milestones, and where you'd like help. Right now it seems like you're a one-man team and a lot of us don't know where to help. Sure we can dig into the bugs, but I feel like I have to get your approval for a lot of stuff before I commit it. Please help us help you.
This e-mail is motivated by some talk I've been seeing lately where folks are bagging on this project saying the code is great, but the developers are unresponsive and releases are slow.
Feedback is appreciated,
Matt
