Support width HTML attribute for tables

I would like to add the width attribute to one of our table displayed with
displaytag.
My issue is that, even though this attribute is XHTML 1.0 Strict, according to
the DTD : http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd
Its support has been dropped in displaytag 1.1 according to
http://displaytag.sourceforge.net/11/tut_style.html
Why is that?
