This example is given in displaytag-12.tld itself

<display:table name="someList" export="true" id="row"
requestURI="MyAction.do">
  <display:column sortable="true" title="ID"> <c:out value="${row.id}"/>
</display:column>
  <display:column property="email" autolink="true"/>
  <display:column property="description" title="Comments"/>
</display:table>

It is supposed to print row ids for each row in first column
dynamically, but comes as blank. So, according to docs, I suppose what
Chris has done is right.

So is there a workaround? IS there a way to do what I am trying to do
without
writing an extension of the Tag?

It's not a bug, only the body of the column is generated at each
iteration. Column attributes are considered static and evaluated only
at the first iteration.
There is already a feature request posted in jira for dinamically
evaluated attributes.
