You have three choices then:

* Get the whole result set and page it in memory (obvious performance issues
with the memory footprint)
* Get each page of results one at a time using SQL (obvious problem is
continuously rerunning the query)
* Write your own ORM or use Hibernate to wrap the legacy objects.

Again, this is really outside of the purview of displaytag.  You're talking
about data handling and caching issues.
