I believe that the display tag itself doesn't work very well for large data
sets.  I do expect that you could grab some of the tag's parameters and use
a page # to limit the amount of data returned.  You might take a look at 
ValueList
(valuelist.sf.net) if you're talking directly to a database.  It seems to handle
large lists better.
