Sounds fine to me. What are you using as a MVC framework, Struts, Webwork, etc?
I could make some more suggestions if you're using one.

Setting the "paging.banner.group_size" value in your displaytag.properties may
help. Look for that property here:
http://displaytag.sourceforge.net/configuration.html

The default is 8, so i am not sure if this to small a value for you or not.
