Sorry if this has already been asked, but I've spent quite some time searching for some answers now and my understanding of servlets/struts/taglibs is not the best.

We used displaytag with struts on my last project with much success :) and I would like to do the same on my current project.  But our managers here have started asking some tricky questions that I didn't have a reliable answers for.  Basically they are concerned about network performance when paging and memory consumption in the session (our sessions are for 24hr).

I found the following options in the documentation:
"You can define the scope of the bean adding one of the following suffix:
     pageScope
     requestScope (default)
     sessionScope
     applicationScope"

RequestScope:  When paging a large data set, is the complete data for the bean being passed back and forth on the request/response between the browser and the web tier?

Sessionscope: Is the complete bean data retrieved on each page selection, or just the page the user has selected (I presume in this mode I need to manage the lifetime of the bean in the session manually to avoid any memory issues due to our long session expiry).

How do the other two options work?

Your help is much appreciated!

Kind Regards

Peter Bridge
