Yes.

Not really.  The list that is displayed is generated at the server before
the list is returned to the client browser in the HTTP response.  I
suppose you could then take the list and parse it out and rejigger it, but
that sounds like a MASSIVE hassle that would probably be MUCH slower than
a trip back to the server.

No.  It might be interesting as an exercise, but that's about it.

That could be useful to solve your problem if the issue is that the rest
of the page surrounding your table requires intensive listing.  But I
really doubt that displaytag itself will ever try to handle that.  You
certainly could try to do it, but as far as displaytag would be concerned,
it would be no different from standard sorting/grouping/paging requests.
