Thanks for the pointer, but this seems to only do DNS, not other
nsswitch options such as /etc/hosts or NIS.  Not an absolute
impediment, but it would be nice to support them for users who need
them.

Also, skadns is part of djbos, and using it means diving down
a long rabbit hole and saying goodbye to Unix APIs in general.
I wouldn't recommend it unless you are willing to drink the djb koolaid
(which may be yummy but takes a lot of getting used to).
