That was the tip I needed. Even though the CD was being read enough to boot, it 
was not being mounted. And that's because... 

Yep, operator error. I have 1.000 IDE ports on this motherboard. The CF adapter 
plugs into the motherboard directly, disallowing the use of another IDE device. 
No problem - I have this here IDE drive to SATA adapter to connect the CD drive 
to. It works fine, except that EON cannot for some reason mount the CD if it's 
attached this way.

I was very frustrated until I remembered an old USB external case that might 
work with an IDE CD drive. It did. EON mounts this fine, and the install to the 
compact flash drive went without a hitch. 

Again, thanks. The "not mounting the CD drive" was the key. The Syba IDE to 
SATA drive adapter will not do it under EON.
