dre2kse, thanks for that info, i've had a look at the image and it does contain all the right information in the sharetab.
so somewhere after the unzip of the image to the starting up of the zfs stuff this gets overwritten. is is possible to watch that file for changes? any ideas on how I can accomplish this? the changes i made reccently was enable swap in the .exec, which i have tried to back out with no difference.
