I think what he means is that he doesn't like the way it is at the
moment and thinks that the version numbers and other metadata should sit in a config file somewhere.

No, that's not what Tarek said at all, perhaps he can comment on why a static metadata system needs to provide a registry mechanism so that arbitrary code can be called?
