Agreed.

Also, I'd suggest that the fork work on splitting out the components
of setuptools - pkg_resources, the distutils extensions, easy_install
- so that they can be used independently. That may mean being prepared
to have a number of project names, rather than just one...

And now I'll refrain from bikeshedding further, too.
