I thought of that as well when writing the demo REQUESTED functionality
- - I was duplicating work that was already done for RECORD and INSTALLER.
pkg_resources has this generic API and it seems to work well.

Even if PEP 376 gains that API, IMO the REQUESTED metadata is useful
enough to be standardized, rather than restricted to a particular tool.
