I'm usually aiming to deliver WebHelp based on DITA source, which works
like a charm. Every now and then (particularly for reviews) I need to
output .pdf instead. I can then edit the result with Acrobat Pro and add
a cover page (corporate logo, product-family graphic and so on) I've
prepared as a .pdf outside XML Mind. Can you suggest a more integrated
approach, or shall I carry on the way I've started?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

You should give XSLT parameter title-page=<URI of a hand-written XSL-FO file> a try.

See http://www.xmlmind.com/ditac/_distrib/doc/manual/webhelp/xsltParams.html#xsltParams__title-page
