Your idea of a server appliance was discussed quite a few times already.
While I don't know why Logi didn't try (they tried sillier things IMHO),
there are a few reasons I can find

No. Or you need to provide your own network, in Sonos fashion. And even
then, you need user support.

No. What drive format, music format, are files ok ??? (Internet radio or
music in the cloud doesn't have this issue.)

A config page is too complex for many. Smartphone apps are better but
not everybody has a smartphone yet. And then many won't know how to use

No. Because they don't understand what the thing is needed for. Touch
includes a server, but unfortunately it is too limited in capabilities.

You're trying to dumb down something that is sophisticated in essence.
This makes nobody happy.
When ipv6 is around and wireless communication cheaper and redundant
maybe we'll see cohorts of things that just work (ie are remotely
monitored and managed) and collaborate together in our homes. Until
then, people will have to get interested in the plumbing. And that's a
minority.
