Bear in mind that certain NAS devices do not transcode. I use a Zyxel NSA310, and it does not transcode, because Zyxel have pulled all the coding in LMS that is processor intensive and memory hogging. So the machine serves files, and little else.
I had an issue with transcoding once, because I was running a Touch and a SB3, and the SB3 couldn't play a fair amount of material because of it requiring transcoding. I bougght another Touch to replace the SB3, and the problem went away. Without knowing the environment that the OP's LMS is working in it's impossible to answer the question.
