Given that your starting point is pCP then adding IR control is straight-forward and has a number of options. See https://docs.picoreplayer.org/components/ir/ I don't know what the OP did but for my simple pCP setup I used a TSOP connected to the GPIO on the Pi and I use a regular Squeezebox remote with it to control Jivelite.
