 PR [https://github.com/django/django/pull/9808 9808] revealed a bug in the
 MySQL back-end.  `mysqlclient` returns `bytes` instead of `strings` in
 some edge cases, e.g.:

 ```LPad('name', Length('alias'))```,
 ```Replace('name', Length('alias'))```.
