Comment:

 I'm not sure what happened in your specific case, but this is not
 generally true of Mac OS X. I've set up Django on numerous OS X machines
 running both 10.5 and 10.6 and have not needed to set this path variable.

 Moreover, a quick search on Google returns quite a lot of advice saying
 *not* to set it the way you recommend, as it is likely to break other
 applications.

 It may have been that things were installed in non-standard places... I've
 also heard reports of Fink or MacPorts misbehaving in the past, but I
 don't think it's safe to recommend this to everyone at present.
