Another thought:
Do we need a new permanent section devoted to showing the current sort
order? In the common case of a single sort column, we already have the
information displayed in terms of the header field being highlighted and
the arrow. The popup for more complex sort orders could be triggered from
(something like) the cog as it currently is.
