Yeah, I poked around in the djangoproject.com code when I was first
starting out and trying to get a feel for how it worked, and found
that some things are flat pages in the DB; you'll need to create some
"filler" flat pages to really be able to try it out.

Also, note that the templates used on the djangoproject.com site are
copyrighted.
