There's a thread I started in the python newsgroup about pymssql but where were also discussed several other ways to connect to a MSSqlServer database. I think it contains usefull info on the subject [1]
Some days ago someone also pointed out to me Pyodb [2], which might be a good option (although it seems to be a *nix solution only).
