Your .list is in the wrong place:
<ul>
{% for date in sale_list%}
<li>{{ date.grouper }}
<ul>
{% for sale in date.list %}
<li>{{ sale.item }} - {{ sale.qty }} </li>
{% endfor %}
</ul>
</li>
{% endfor %}
</ul>
