I use
urlpatterns = patterns('django.views.generic.simple',
(r'^$', 'direct_to_template',{'template': 'index.html'}),
)
Where template is the defined template directory in my settings.py
Seems a better way to me, as then if you want to expand your site you
can just incorperate django's templating language.
