The admin interface is functional for editing, but not necessarily the prettiest. The beauty of the admin interface lies in the heavy lifting it does for you, and the fact that it is easily extendable--you can override any of its templates to provide extra functionality and/or your own look and feel, without having to re-invent the wheel.
I would advise to use it and learn to tweak it.
