we're gettin OT, but i want to point that Flex (the Flash library and CLI compiler) is OSS (licensed under MPL). It's the 'nice' toolset (Flex Builder) the non-free part. If you're comfortable with just writing code, you don't need to shell a dime. Personally, I've developed a couple of applications that way and it's certainly a real option.
