Have you simplified your example? This functionality works well when
used correctly:

>>> class TestForm(ModelForm):
...   range = CharField(widget=HiddenInput)
...   class Meta:
...     model=Foo
...
>>> f=TestForm()
>>> f.as_p()
u'<p><label for="id_name">Name:</label> <input type="text" name="name"
id="id_name" /><input type="hidden" name="range" id="id_range" /></p>'

As you can see, the range field is clearly hidden.
