If I were you, I would just try to upgrade my python install. We are using Red Had ES 4 and it came with python 2.3.4 which had a few bugs in it, which forced us to upgrade to python 2.3.5. We found that RPMs don't really work that well, but compiling from source seemed to work just fine.
