Why doesn't it make sense to leave them in the app? That's fairly common practice. You'll see tests shipped with a lot of 3rd-party apps (and for that matter with a lot of code libraries in general). For running the tests, see this doc: https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.4/topics/testing/
