I've been a python dev since 2000 and Django since 2005. I've
evaluated the alternatives for several years now (including Ruby/Rails
and Python/Quixote which are still cool) and just cannot avoid the
conclusion that Django is the place to be for serious SOA development.
Well I find myself at a new company (major global media firm) picking
up the pieces of an "over exuberent" high-profile PHP project - their
first attempt to do an SOA thing. It appears that my "woulda, shoulda,
coulda, outtas" have won out if only to get me to put up or shut up.
I've got a great staff but they've never been exposed to real SOA/Web
stuff much less Python or Django. I've got a couple of new hires coming
in that do have some experience in that area and I'm confident we're
going to deliver some great services but I need to get the best
infrastructure in place that I can because I won't get the opportunity
for a "redo" since this opportunity already is the redo! This means I
need to get the rest of my staff trained and in tune ASAP.
I've got a development group in New York City and Bangkok.(This is
not a classic off-shore effort. All the staff own all the product from
design through test. We're just a global company.) I probably have the
ability to hire a few more staff at each location but what I'm really
looking for is local (or easily traveled) training opportunities or
consultants who have done this stuff a few times and not only know what
to do but also (especially?) what NOT to do. I need to get my staff up
to speed in Python as a language and development environment. They need
to understand the concepts of true SOA and how Django provides them the
best framework to develop on. We are, fortunately, already well on the
way to becoming a pure Agile shop and have had great success with those
efforts. I need help taking us to the next level with Test Driven
Development.
So, I guess this is a call for suggestions and request for options
from people who might be able to help me make this happen and add
another giant feather in the Python/Django cap. My staff is great and
we have technically minded project managers who have some excellent
awareness of the business and great concepts to implement. I need help
getting them as confident in the new technology direction as I am so we
will be able to boldy act on these plans and deliver the level of
product that I know we can.
Thanx for your thoughtful support,
-- Ben
