Yes, I too have had difficulties, though I find the following link:

http://www.google.com/search?q=%s%20%28site%3Adjangoproject.com%20OR%20site%3Adjangobook.com%29%20-site%3Acode.djangoproject.com

when bookmarked in FireFox and given a keyword (I use "dj")
allows me to type things like

        dj filter

in the URL location, and FF will search for "filter" on
djangobook.com and djangoproject.com (excluding
code.djangoproject.com which I find to be a bit of chaff when I'm
searching for documentation).

It's not an ideal solution, but it works rather well for me.

-tkc

(the search in FF+Google becomes

filter (site:djangoproject.com OR site:djangobook.com)
-site:code.djangoproject.com

in case you don't want to unpack those escapings in the URL).
